Art Speak Newsletter Artist Spotlight

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Kelly Hughes

Kelly Hughes is an artist, arts educator, and entrepreneur. She has a degree in Fine Arts/Science from New York State and has completed coursework in fine arts, biology, and elementary education. She began Open Window Studio in 2001, to support local artists by offering instructional classes for youth and adults. She has also begun to give classes at the Cape Public Library, titled "Creation Station" for ages 4-7 and "Studio Art Adventures" for grades 4-7 on March 22. In addition, she has become the Art & Soul Event Coordinator at Yoga East Healing Arts Studio, where she offers the Art &Soul Currents workshops, coordinates art exhibit events, and serves as a yoga instructor.

As well as teaching art lessons, she has built a reputation as a professional artist through completing over 55 interior mural commissions, commissioned portraits and paintings, theatre and stage backdrops, commercial graphic designs and business logos, signs, and billboards.

In her private art practice, she seeks to share her unique voice by making artwork that speaks of her own life experience, merging concept and form to invoke meaningful response from those that view it. While her preferred media include pencil illustration, acrylic murals, pastel, watercolor, sculpture and fashion design she also uses what she calls a “material of the moment.” This has included stained glass, paper clay, beeswax, and more.
